Market Overview
As Quarter 4 and the year comes to a close, there continues to
be mixed fortunes within the legal market.
From a recruitment perspective, the quarter started with a busy
flurry with appointments being made within transactional corporate,
employment, IP/IT, licensing, renewables and banking. Private
practice remains busy across the specialist areas such as IP/IT,
employment, renewables, insolvency and corporate restructuring. In-
house has slowed down slightly, although there does continue to be
opportunities across certain sectors such as renewables, healthcare
and sport.
The paralegal market has slowed somewhat , however there have
been opportunities available on a contract basis, mainly within
personal injury and conveyancing.
Surprisingly we have not seen as many mergers as we might have
expected in such tough economic conditions.. From speaking to a
variety of firms across the market the mood remains one of cautious
optimism. Firms are operating with reduced staffing levels, have
focussed their business development and retention strategies and
continue to be productive.
Unfortunately there are still redundancies happening but
thankfully not on the scale we have seen before. Hopefully the end
of 2011 will see the end of the redundancies and we can enter into
2012 on a positive note.
